Conference: “To be or not to be – Historical Theater Buildings: Use and Modernisation”

We are pleased to present the VR experience about the “Großes Schauspielhaus Berlin” at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum Frankfurt / Main on September 16 and 17, 2021 – ICOMOS conference “To be or not to be –Historic Theater Buildings: Use and Modernisation”.

Theaters and opera houses represent great buildings, they stand for a high tangible cultural heritage worldwide. And also for an immaterial one, based on the diversity of artistic forms of expression with their ensembles that look back on long traditions.

The international symposium “To be or not to be” deals on the one hand with the general renovation, modernisation and extension of listed theater buildings and opera houses, which are among the major conservation and architectural tasks of the present day in Europe. On the other hand, it also raises questions regarding the further use of the constantly changing performance venues of the performing arts.

On September 16 and 17, intersections between preservation and intangible cultural heritage will be found and discussed together with preservationists, artistic directors, architects and artists.

“With our virtual reality project “Opening Night at the Großes Schauspielhaus”, we can make a valuable contribution to making cultural heritage visible and tangible – with state-of-the-art technology and innovative mediation approaches. We are looking forward to the exchange about reconstruction methods and narrative strategies – also in the digital space” emphasizes Franziska Ritter, one of the project leaders of the digital.DTHG team, who have been working on this project in cooperation with the Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin, the Stadtmuseum Berlin and other archives over the last months.
